…and did I hear someone say, “Pour over coffee”?
Ever wonder what the day after the Garage Gym Competition looks like? All you see are the posts and 1RM max lifts, but what happens after?
I always make sure to take it super easy the day after. Not gonna lie, waking up this morning almost felt as hard as yesterday’s deadlift. But the more I got moving, the better I felt. I made sure to stay extra hydrated and eat plenty of protein.
I also made sure to take time to simply reflect and enjoy the day as it happened. Starting with my morning coffee and ending with a celebratory steak for dinner. What better way to reflect on my performance than with a high quality pour over coffee. It’s so good I can no longer keep this secret to myself. In fact, I would consider this recommendation ABOVE AVERAGE!

What you need:
Hario V60 Ceramic Pour Over https://amzn.to/4aqmXDJ

Filters https://amzn.to/3QTpnnz Hario V60 paper filters, size 02

Electric Gooseneck Kettle for precise pours and temperature control. I prefer 201 degrees, but you can adjust based on your personal preference, time of year, altitude/boiling point, etc. https://amzn.to/4bHM5ab

Kitchen Scale for exact bean and water ratios. I use 40g beans and 400g water, or 30g/300g for a smaller mug. https://amzn.to/3QUlbE6

Burr Grinder. I use a medium-fine grind. https://amzn.to/3wJeHRw

Your favorite freshly roasted coffee bean. Always buy whole coffee beans, and light to medium roasts tend to work best with pour overs. The best that I have found is Royal Mile Coffee, a local roaster based in New Jersey. He has mastered the art of light roast, and has a continuously rotating lineup, meaning small batch, in-season, and fresh. Plus some fun seasonal mixes. https://royalmilecoffee.com/

Also, keeping your beans fresh is also important. I use a Coffeevac airtight vacuum container and keep the beans inside their original bag and sealed in the coffevac container. https://amzn.to/44Peh8E

If you really want to be fancy, do latte art, and feel like a barista, you’ll need one of these bad boys https://amzn.to/3V6ofOx .
But that’s a post for a different day: “Lifts and Lattes” Stay tuned

Step 1: Place filter into Hario V60, and place over mug or carafe. Pour hot water into filter and allow to drain into mug to rinse filter and pre-heat mug. Dump water out of mug and add grounds to the V60. Zero scale.
Step 2: “Bloom” the grounds by pouring about 50-60g water in a circular motion until the grounds are just covered. You will see the beans bubble and bloom. Repeat after the water begins to drain.
Step 3: Continue to add water to just cover the grounds just after it nearly drains after the previous pour. Repeat until you have reached your total grams of water.
Step 4: Enjoy! And maybe you’ll discover that coffee actually tastes good black!
Stay strong, and don’t forget to rest and recover!
