Ok, fine… It’s mowing the lawn. It’s yard work.
BUT I’M STILL COUNTING IT AS CARDIO!
The truth is, yard work, gardening, mowing the lawn, etc. are all great forms of physical activity. Since many store their yard work equipment in the garage, what better combination for a GARAGE GYM than sharing the space with your yard equipment. You can work out, then go work out…side!

My Routine
On a full yard work day, I still like to include some lifting in the morning. I prefer to train my accessory movements for the block on this day, knowing that my yard requires a lot of my time and energy and I would rather not do heavy squats or deadlifts before mowing the lawn. In addition, strength training BEFORE cardio has much less impact on strength gains versus doing cardio training first.
After my lifting session, I’ll ensure I pre-hydrate, prep my hydration strategy during the yard work, eat, and get the tools ready. Typically I’ll start mowing, then finish with edging and trimming as needed.
Electric or Gas?
I’m not here to say if electric tools are better than gas-powered tools. However, if you use your garage as your workout space, I HIGHLY recommend electric for a number of reasons:
- No gasoline fumes from stored gas cans or mowing equipment
- Improved storage capability, particularly vertical storage/wall storage of equipment without gas or oil leaks
- Noise reduction, the neighbors will thank you
- Eco friendly

Popular Pick:
EGO Power+ Self-propelled Mower
This is the upgraded version of what I use, and probably the most popular pick of all EGO Mowers since it is self-propelled. I chose NON self-propelled on purpose, otherwise I would probably own this product. Don’t let the “electric mower” scare you away. This mows better than any gas-powered mower I have ever used, with an excellent battery life. I can mow my entire front yard plus most, and sometimes ALL of my backyard (depending on the length of grass) in one charge.

MY PICK:
EGO Power+ Push Mower
This is the mower I ACTUALLY USE and have used now for over 4 years, but still runs as if it’s brand new! The original battery still lasts for about an hour, and recharges within an hour, and still mows better than any gas-powered mower I have ever used.
If you want more of a workout and cardio, choose this NON self-propelled push mower like I did. It’s cheaper and honestly does not require that much more effort, unless, of course, you have a gigantic yard or hills to mow.

What I WISH I Had:
EGO Power+ Select Cut Push Mower
The difference here is the BLADE, which has improved mulching capability. Either this is new, or I was unaware of this product when I first purchased my EGO mower. If I were buying a new mower today, this would be my top choice.

Edgers and Trimmers
ALL IN ONE:
EGO Power+ Carbon Fiber Multi-head Combo Kit
If buying from EGO, GET THE MULTI-HEAD OPTION. This is the one I actually own and use, and has been one of the best yardwork purchases I have made. To swap between edger and trimmer takes seconds, but by far the best feature is the powerload string replacement feature, converting one of the most frustrating yardwork tasks into a delightful breeze.
The main head can be used to power multiple additional tools using the same rapid attachment swap. This includes a hedge trimmer, pole saw, bristle brush, cultivator, and snow blower.

CHEAPER OPTION:
EGO Power+ String Trimmer
Yes, this is the cheaper option, but it is limited, and NOT interchangeable. Unless you are confident that you will only purchase a string trimmer, and only ever use a string trimmer, don’t make the same mistake as I did by purchasing this. Invest in the first option listed above and you can continue to add additional tools you need via attachments rather than purchasing each separately.

A must-have not just for yard care but for any Garage Gym! Keep your floors clean and easily dust off your equipment. For the average gym owner, a basic blower like this is all you need.
