Yerba maté, or simply maté, is a traditional tea famously known in Argentina, but also enjoyed in surrounding countries including Uruguay, Paraguay, and Brazil, among others. The the leaf, or yerba, comes from the yerba maté plant/tree leaves, and then undergoes a process of drying, roasting, and maturation before it is packaged and sold. Traditionally, maté is enjoyed among family and friends. There are numerous health benefits of maté, it is typically used as an energy-booster due to its caffeine content similar to coffee. Many report it has a more “smooth” caffeine effect compared to coffee, and I would agree. I typically consume maté around lunchtime.

Here’s a great video on how to prepare un buen maté

Here’s everything I use to prepare my yerba maté:

Maté Gourd and Bombilla (straw)

You can go simple or as decorative as you like. I prefer a stainless steel cup for ease of cleaning.

Yerba Maté

My preferred brand is Rosamonte con palo (with stems)

Thermos con pico (spout)

I love the Stanley 2 QT Thermos! For the purposes of pouring maté, a replacement lid attachment is required.

Electric Kettle

You need precise temperature for pouring the water just before boiling point.

PROVECHO!
