This type of integration is long overdue. Despite DUPR’s claims of being the most accurate, reliable, and universal rating system available, DUPR is limited by regional cohorts, opt-in match reporting, and data from match results. So let’s explore some of these claims, and why PB Vision can be a game changer for DUPR.

Claim: designed to deliver the most accurate and dynamic pickleball ratings in the world.
Reality – DUPR does not transfer well between regions and cohorts of players. Without calibration of the rating to a player’s skill, it is impossible to claim that a rating will be transferrable around the globe. For example, 4.5 rated player who only competes in Alaska may only be a 3.0 rating when playing against players in Florida.

Claim: Play regularly to keep your rating dynamic and reflective of your current skill! A higher Reliability Score means your DUPR is more likely to reflect your current skill level.
Reality – Unless a player’s baseline skill level has been established, a high Reliability Score only means you report matches more frequently than others. Again, without calibration of a player’s rating and skill, it is impossible to claim that a rating is accurate. DUPR’s claims are technically correct from a statistical and algorithmic standpoint, which is why they use the term reliability.

Let’s take this a step further and break it down in terms of statistical analysis. The ultimate goal of a DUPR rating is validity, meaning a player’s true skill level reflects their rating and can be predicted across matches and players. Currently, DUPR is a highly reliable statistical model, meaning that it can predict the outcome of a match between opponents, but it cannot generate an accurate skill assessment of the players involved. In order for DUPR to claim their rating is reflective of your current skill, they need to incorporate accuracy of a player’s skill PLUS the reliability of the algorithm to predict a match outcome to give validity to a player’s rating.

Since PB vision is aimed at recording performance during any given match, their ratings are accurate, but not always reliable since player performance can vary day to day and opponent to opponent. PB Vision would be a poor predictor of match results between opponents, but would provide a much more accurate skill rating. The combination of PB Vision + DUPR would integrate accuracy + reliability for a rating with high validity.

Improving Rating Validity (Accuracy + Reliability)
I am hopeful that DUPR and PB Vision are able to combine their resources to provide highly accurate, reliable, valid, and calibrated ratings that can create a truly Universal rating system! While awaiting full integration, the best next thing is more data.
